Viewpoint Shares the Experience of Photography with Boys and Girls Club of Sacramento

By Susan Bobrow, Viewpoint Educational Outreach Coordinator

In keeping with its educational and charitable purpose, Viewpoint recently conducted a series of classes for children in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Sacramento (Teichert Center).

The educational outreach project, staffed by a group of Viewpoint volunteers and a representative from the Boys and Girls Club, consisted of eight weeks of classes offering an introduction to photography to children from 9 to 12 years of age. Viewpoint volunteers who taught and assisted in the Tuesday evening classeswere Larry Bordeaux, Anita Fein, John Hennessy, Bob Hicks, Judith Monroe, Dave Robertson, and Connie Saint. As Chair of the Educational Outreach Committee, I coordinated the project for Viewpoint.

The Tuesday evening classes included such topics as Seeing Photographically, Expressing Emotions in Photographs, History of Photography, and Before and After (telling a story using a series of images). During class, the children used digital point-andshoot cameras owned by the Boys and Girls Club, and for homework assignments disposable film cameras donated by Viewpoint were distributed so that the students could independently take photographs related to the week’s lesson.

The program culminated with a show of the children’s work for friends and family at the Boys and Girls Club community room. The children were presented with Certificates of Accomplishment (and lots of cookies) and were able to show their photographs to the many people who attended. A number of the children expressed strong interest in continuing to participate in a photography program at the Club facility.

The interest and enthusiasm of the kids involved in this program far exceeded our expectations. We were amazed by the creativity and talent that the children demonstrated. Probably the biggest highlight was the temporary installation one evening of a darkroom by Bob Hicks, so that the kids could experience the magic of seeing their images emerge in the chemicals. The kids really thought that was cool.

The program could not have happened without the strong commitment of the Viewpoint volunteers. They were an enormous help to me as chair of this program, and I think that all of the Viewpoint members should be aware of the great work they did.
