Viewpoint Gallery presents its first Cell Phone Only Exhibition during the month of October. Recently, the cell phone has become the most ubiquitous type of camera in history, used by some of the most visually sophisticated, technically savvy, and globally connected image-makers ever. This international, juried show attempts to provide some idea of the breadth and creativity being achieced with these small, portable additions to the exciting history of photographic tools.

Photos by Sean Duggan, Jean Ross, David Ruderman, and Annette Allen

Kodak's introduction of the Brownie camera in 1900, Polaroid's introduction of the Land Camera in 1948, and the first affordable digital cameras in the early 2000s were all major innovations in photographic technology marketed to the consuming public.  Every such innovation has substantially increased the number of people making photographs, the number of images photographers make, and the importance of picture-making in people's lives. More importantly, each major innovation has stimulated new ways of seeing the world, new ways of thinking visually, and new ways of sharing one's vision and experiences with the world.

Viewpoint Gallery invited cell phone photographers worldwide to submit images produced using any cell phone available to them. The only manipulations allowed were those made possible by applications on the cell phone itself (no exporting to Photoshop!).

This juried exhibit is being judged by Dan Burkholder, one of the first photographic artists to embrace digital technology in the early 1990s. Dan has taught classes and workshops at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the International Center of Photography in New York, the University of Texas at San Antonio, the Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, and others. You can visit Dan Burkholder's web site at www.danburkholder.com.

There will be a Best of Show Award, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place Awards in each of two categories (Youth and Adult).
