B&W Digital Conversion

Registration is closed for this event
David Robertson, local digital photographic expert, will demonstrate and explain various methods to convert color digital images into black and white images that allow the photographer more control over the final black and white image.

There are a multitude of methods by which a black & white image can be created from a digital color file, including desaturation, grayscale conversion, channel mixing, and L*A*B conversion. In addition to these basic techniques, the digital photographer now has available different software progams, either as stand alone programs or as plug-ins to Lightroom and/or Photoshop, to more carefully control the final black & white image.
This workshop will demonstrate the various methods available to digital photographers for converting a color image into a black & white image, using the tools available in Adobe Lightroom 2.7, Adobe Photoshop CS4, Nik Silver Efex Pro, and George DeWolfe’s PercepTool plug-in for Photoshop.

The results from each of the different techniques will be compared using a limited number of color files so that the differences can be easily  evaluated, and the converted images will be printed.

Your Instructor: David L. Robertson

I have been interested in photography since college, where I learned how to develop my own negatives and to print black and white images. My images tend to reflect strong graphical elements and simplicity, regardless of subject matter, and have been described by NYC photographer and friend, Jay Maisel, as reflecting solitude, without loneliness. I have previously taught workshops on Lightroom and Photoshop at Viewpoint and at various camera clubs in the Sacramento region. I have also had several solo and group exhibits of my photographs, including a solo exhibit at the Pence Gallery in Davis (January 2008) and a group exhibit at Viewpoint (May 2009).
