David L. Robertson, a local digital photographic expert and Viewpoint member, will demonstrate and explain the newest features in Adobe's latest version of Lightroom.

Lightroom 3's new and improved features:

  • Revised Import Module graphical user interface (GUI) and ability to create an Import Preset
  • Publish directly to Flickr and receive comments from Flickr within Lightroom.
  • Enhanced sharpening.
  • Enhanced noise reduction for both luminance and color, with the ability to protect detail and contrast.
  • New Grain tool to simulate film textures.
  • Revised post-crop Vignette Tool, featuring three settings: Highlight Priority, Color Priority and Paint Overlay (Lightroom 2 approach).
  • Demosaicing algorithm has been updated for first time since 2003, resulting in two process versions (2003 or 2010) found in Develop Module, under Camera Calibration.
  • Additional badge to show whether an image is in one or more Collections, and if so, which.
  • Catalog Backup prompt appears when leaving Lightroom rather than when entering.
  • Slideshows can now be exported with music.
  • Watermarking capability.
  • Custom Print Packages that provide complete control over final product.
  • Tethered shooting is simplified.
  • Lens-specific corrections for a large variety of lens manufactured by Nikon, Canon, Sigma, Sony and Tamron; as well as the ability to make manual adjustments to distortion, chromatic aberration and vignetting.
  • Collections are now accessible in the Develop Module.
  • Tool is deselected when you move from one tool to the next.

Your Instructor: David L. Robertson

I have been interested in photography since college, where I learned how to develop my own negatives and to print black and white images. My photographs tend to reflect strong graphical elements and simplicity; regardless of subject matter. They have been described by NYC photographer and friend, Jay Maisel, as reflecting solitude, without loneliness. I have previously taught workshops on Lightroom and Photoshop at Viewpoint and at various photography groups in the Sacramento region. I have also had several solo and group exhibits of my photographs, including a solo exhibit at the Pence Gallery in Davis (January 2008), a group exhibit at Viewpoint (May 2009), and a two-person exhibit in Roseville (May 2010).  I have another two-person exhibit scheduled for a gallery in Oregon (October 2011).
