Handmade Books - A Complete Instructional Guide

Registration is closed for this event
This workshop--facilitated by fellow Viewpoint member Gary W. Vann--features a simple approach to book design, including a practical review of new printing techniques and a step-by-step guide to binding photo books.

Photo books are different in design, printing and construction. If you take pride in printing your own work and have long wondered how a custom photo book is made, this is your chance. Each individual step in handmade photo bookmaking will be demonstrated, and a comprehensive training DVD will be provided for all attendees. The purpose of this workshop is to examine a new low cost, high quality, do-it-yourself alternative to other types of photo book publishing.

  • A one-day or two-day workshop: Saturday, June 26th and/or Sunday, June 27th.
  • For those attendees who want to watch the demonstrations only: sign-up for Saturday, Sunday, or both days. Tuition: $100 each day.
  • For those attendees who want hands-on experience (with Gary's help), sign-up for both days. Tuition: $200, plus the $40 materials fee.
  • Workshop hours: 9am to 4pm both days.
  • Lunch is not included. A sack lunch is encouraged.

Each days' enrollment is limited to 8 lucky attendees.

As a photographer with many years of practical experience, like many, I've had an intermittent interest in publishing.  With recent advances in digital technology many photographers and professional printers are able to produce high quality files and finished prints.  Nonetheless, translating this work into a book format is associated with various practical problems.  Traditional publishers can duplicate original work, but high costs associated with design and printing quality during production runs tend to frustrate theoretical results.  Print-on-demand publishers have eliminated many volume related sales problems, but design formats are limited and print quality does not approach original work.
