Milky Way and Star Trails: Night Photography at Lassen Volcanic National Park

Registration is closed for this event
Some of the most exciting images are taken at night. Joe Fischer will show you how to capture brilliant photos of the Milky Way Galaxy as well as unique compositions with star trails so you can capture the heavens with unique items of interest. Please note: This workshop has been reschedule to Friday., Oct. 5th due to fires in the area. The skies should be clear and full of stars by October. Please join us!

This workshop will take place in the dark skies of Lassen Volcanic National Park located about three hours north of Sacramento. You’ll receive instruction and learn how to set up a composition before nightfall. Then we’ll start creating images at sunset and keep shooting as late as people would like. In this workshop you’ll learn how to:

  • Use the night sky to create astonishing images
  • Plan your shots with software so you can save time and pre-plan shots
  • Adjust the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO for night shooting
  • Focus the lens in darkness
  • Use an intervalometer or manually create star trails
  • Work with a PixelStick to create one of a kind night images

Participants can make their own hotel reservation anywhere near our location or work with Joe to arrange camp sites. Most likely Joe will try to reserve several sites at a super nice campground located just outside the park's main entrance. For Lassen reservations or questions, people can contact Joe directly at (916) 505-1360 or Please let him know your preference as soon as possible.

Required Equipment

  • Tripod: You must have a tripod in order to do this type of shooting.
  • Camera: DLSR or camera than can be used with full manual settings
  • Lens: 35mm or wider and f2.8 is preferred. Longer focal lengths such as 50mm are not desirable. A lens with f3.5 aperture will work and will be sufficient.
