Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park and North Bloomfield Ghost Town

Back by popular demand. Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park / North Bloomfield is located about an hour north east from Nevada City / Grass Valley, CA. The area is rich with photographic possibilities from the ghost town of North Bloomfield to the "diggins" mine pit made famous by the photographs by Carleton Watkins in the late 1800's. This workshop will provide you with unique photographic opportunities as well as special instruction on handling the diverse conditions often found when photographing historical sites.

You don't want to miss this one!

During the morning session, participants will have rare access to the interiors of several of the historical buildings in the ghost town of North Bloomfield, including the McKillican Mobley General Store and Knotwell's Drug Store. You will also be able to photograph the exteriors of the other buildings and homes in this ghost town. Not to mention the incredible landscape surrounding the town.

During the afternoon we will traverse down into the historic Malakoff Diggins hydraulic mining area to follow in the footsteps of Carleton Watkins' famous hydraulic mining photos made here in the 1800s. The easy hiking path into the Diggins is only about hundred yards long. Good shoes are recommended. For those that do not wish go into the Diggins, several vista points along the park road will be pointed out.

Special instruction on how to photograph interiors of historical sites while minimizing the risk and damage to artifacts or creating any negative impact on the site will be provided. The Aiello's will also provide group and individual instruction for handling both High and Low Dynamic Range conditions. "Reverse HDR" or "Low Dynamic Range" allows you to expand the dynamic range often found in low contrast subjects like existing light interiors, overcast, and foggy conditions to get more range in your images than is possible simply by moving a slider in your imaging software.

Members of the Friends of North Bloomfield and Malakoff Diggins will be on hand to provide information about the buildings and history of the area.

The California State Parks have lost a lot of funding over the years. So, part of your tuition will go to supporting the on-going maintenance and support of this hidden gem of California history, as well as Viewpoint! For those not familiar with Malakoff Diggins, it is located about an hour north east of Grass Valley / Nevada City.

Advanced meeting:
For those staying in or around Nevada City / Grass Valley a pre-workshop get-together is being considered for Friday evening, October 5.

REGISTRATION LIMITED TO 12 LUCKY PARTICIPANTS: Don't miss this very rare and exciting opportunity! Last time around it sold-out very quickly.
