A History of Night Photography

Workshop leader, Tim Baskerville, Director of the night photography group, The Nocturnes, sheds new light on some of the seldom seen innovators and pioneers of the genre—as well as current practitioners of night photography in the digital era.

In this workshop you will travel from Daguerreotype to digital, in a decade-by-decade survey of night photography (NPy) and the technological advances that made it ever more possible and popular in the modern psyche. The course includes a detailed PowerPoint presentation by well-known night photographer, Tim Baskerville, with relevant lecture handouts and discussion of current and historical sources of night photography.

The practice of photographing at night did not begin with DSLRs and the phenomenon of Flickr.  From the very beginnings of photography, adventurous souls have overcome numerous technical obstacles, producing haunting imagery that evoked the almost primordial draw of the nocturne. As night photographers find themselves in another period of enormous technical change, it is important to investigate, study, and understand the long History of Night Photography.
