The Art of Travel Photography

This workshop is intended to help you see the world you travel through and photograph with a different eye. Michael Dunlavey will share examples of his photographs and discuss composition, exploring simplicity versus complexity, the use of light and shadow, as well as color or the lack of color to enhance your work. This will be an exploration of what travelers often miss.

Instructor: Michael Dunlavey, artist/photographer

Attendees are asked to bring three to five examples of their favorite travel photos on a flash drive for discussion with the group. It is not necessary to bring your camera.

Michael Dunlavey enjoyed a forty-year career as a graphic, environmental, and restaurant designer. He was President and Creative Director of The Dunlavey Studio, which he founded in Sacramento with his wife Lindy. During their career he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the world, always with a camera in hand, using those photographs as inspiration for his watercolors. Since his retirement he has had eight watercolor shows and a two-person show at Viewpoint on his photographs of Italy entitled Italia Bella. His watercolor paintings have been included in the Crocker Art Museum juried Art Auction for the past eight years. For decades, Michael has enjoyed a national reputation for creativity and inventive design solutions that reflect his distinctive artistic vision.  Michael’s photography was featured in a ten-year series of international brochures for an Irish tour company, and for a prominent Italian tour company. He has been honored to donate his time and creativity as the main photographer for Sacramento Habitat for Humanity for the past eleven years.

Michael has demonstrated a deep love for and commitment to the arts and has a very extensive background in art and design. He received his B.A. Degree in Art, as well as his Masters Degree in Art, and a teaching credential from California State University, Sacramento. He sat on the Board of Directors of the Crocker Art Museum Association for eleven years and served on the selection committee that chose the architect for the new Crocker Art Museum Expansion. He was on the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation for ten years, during which he served on the Arts Advisory Committee for Advancing Sacramento Arts, which generated a sustained funding stream for small and medium-sized arts organizations in the Sacramento region.
