Luminous Images: Encaustics and Photography with Angela Casagrande

Registration is closed for this event
In this two-part introductory workshop attendees will receive hands on instruction from artist and photographer, Angela Casagrande on the art of encaustics and photography. Encaustic painting is the use of heated beeswax in which colored pigments are added. The heated beeswax may then be applied to any surface. It is an incredibly flexible medium that may be combined with collage, oil, paints, inks, dry media and photography. The history of encaustic painting dates back to ancient times and still maintains it popularity to this day in contemporary art. Day 1: Oct. 19, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Day 2: Oct 20, 9 a.m. to 12 noon

DAY 1: Oct. 19, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.—Overview, lecture and demonstration

During the first class, Angela Casagrande will demonstrate the basics of painting with the molten wax, fusing, mark making and collage techniques.

DAY 2: Oct. 20, 9 a.m. to 12 noon—Hands on creation of your own encaustic piece

On day two, the use of encaustics with a photographic image will be introduced, care and handling of the finished piece will be reviewed, as well as answering questions regarding the encaustic process.

(Please note: there is a $20 materials fee which has been added to the tuition. Angela will supply the wax and wood panel for your work of art.)

Day 1

Please bring two 5”x7” photographs to work with so the glue on the wood panel has time to dry overnight.

Matt finishes work best but students are encouraged to experiment with glossy or luster surfaces.

Day 2

Please bring the following items which will be used to complete your art piece:

  1. Various Ephemera for Collaging: such as magazine pages, old photos, dried leaves or flowers, thread, etc. These items will be used to demonstrate collaging and embedding with encaustics.
