Luminous Images II: Encaustics, Photography and Flame

Registration is closed for this event
Encaustic painting is the use of heated beeswax in which colored pigments are added. The heated beeswax may then be applied to any surface. It is an incredibly flexible medium in that it can be combined with any number of mediums such as collage, oil paints, inks, dry media and photography. This class will introduce students to additional fusing techniques and their creative application through the use of flame, tacking irons and embossing heat guns. Shellac burning as a means of creating abstract surface textures and pyrography pens for small detail work will also be demonstrated.

This hands-on workshop will be presented at Viewpoint outside in our covered and protected breezeway. A 9 a.m. start time will ensure a cool experience for all. Limited to 8 attendees--4 slots left.

  1. Two 5” x 7” photographs. Matte finishes work best but students are encouraged to experiment with glossy or luster surfaces.

  2. Various ephemera for collaging: dried flowers, leaves, fabric, colored paper.

  3. Various items for mark making:  forks, sticks, cookie cutters, etc. Please note that any kitchen item used in this process cannot be used for its original purpose after being used with encaustic wax.

  4. An apron or smock is highly recommended.

Tuition prices includes a $20 materials fee.
