Studio Lighting: Hands-On Approach

Registration is closed for this event
Join David L. Robertson and Dennis McCoy to learn the secrets of portrait lighting and working with models.

Topics covered:

►Posing the model and model etiquette.

►Creating catchlights in eyes.

►Traditional single-light techniques: broad; short; butterfly (glamour, paramount); loop; chiarascuro; clamshell; Rembrandt; split; rim (profile); flat; high key and low key.

►3-point lighting (key, fill and background lights).

►We will provide the model for purposes of demonstrating the various lighting techniques.

►Other materials to construct cards.

We will discuss the equipment used for three different lighting arrangements:

1) Natural light {near the windows along the street side of the gallery}.

2) Strobes.

3) Constant light LEDs.

We will also bring soft boxes, flags, silks and reflectors to show how light sources can be modified to create desired effects.

We will start with the natural light setup, since that is available to everyone.  Then we will move to the constant light setup because this is the easiest artificial light for everyone to handle.

Finally, we will work with strobes since that is what most use as their artificial light source.

8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a 1-hour lunch break.

About David L. Robertson:
I have been interested in photography since college, where I learned how to develop my own negatives and to print black and white images. My photographs tend to reflect strong graphical elements and simplicity; regardless of subject matter. They have been described by NYC photographer and friend—Jay Maisel—as reflecting solitude, without loneliness. I have previously taught more than a dozen workshops on Lightroom, Photoshop, printing and B&W conversion at Viewpoint and at various photography groups in the Sacramento region. I have been a Lightroom instructor for the Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures in New Mexico, Maine, California and Colorado.  I have also had several solo and group exhibits of my photographs, including a solo exhibit at the Pence Gallery in Davis (January 2008), a group exhibit at Viewpoint (May 2009), and a two-person exhibit in Roseville (May 2010).  I have also had a two-person exhibit at the Grants Pass Museum of Art in Oregon (October 2011). You can learn more about me, and see additional photographs, at my website:

About Dennis McCoy:
I became seriously interested in photography while serving in the United States Air Force while on duty at Elmendorf AFB Alaska (Anchorage). After my departure from the USAF, I returned to Sacramento where I studied photography. My first actual photography job was working for the Mountain Democrat in Placerville. Where I photographed everything from the first baby born on New Year’s Day to wildland fires. It was a great training ground for a new photojournalist. Presently, I’m employed at the Sacramento Business Journal, where I photograph business people in their environment.
