Black and White Conversion Techniques for Digital Images

Registration is closed for this event
This workshop will demonstrate the various methods available to digital photographers for converting a color image into a black and white image, using the tools available in Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, Nik Silver Efex Pro, and George DeWolfe’s PercepTool plug-in for Photoshop. Emphasis will be placed on the methods available in each software that provide the greatest control of the conversion, with significant time spent on Nik Silver Efex Pro.

There are a multitude of methods by which a black & white image can be created from a digital color file, including desaturation, grayscale conversion, channel mixing, and L*A*B conversion. In addition to these basic techniques, the digital photographer now has available different software progams, either as stand alone programs or as plug-ins to Lightroom and/or Photoshop, to more carefully control the final black & white image.

This highly concentrated 3-hour workshop is limited to 16 highly fortunate participants. Register Now!

Your Instructor: David L. Robertson:

I have been interested in photography since college, where I learned how to develop my own negatives and to print black and white images.  My photographs tend to reflect strong graphical elements and simplicity: regardless of subject matter. They have been described by NYC photographer and friend, Jay Maisel, as reflecting solitude, without loneliness. I have previously taught more than a dozen workshops on Lightroom and Photoshop at Viewpoint and at various photography groups in the Sacramento region. I have been a Lightroom instructor for the Barefoot Contessa Photo Adventures in New Mexico, Maine, California, and Colorado. I have also had several solo and group exhibits of my photographs, including a solo exhibit at the Pence Gallery in Davis (January 2008), a group exhibit at Viewpoint (May 2009), a two-person exhibit in Roseville (May 2010) and another two-person exhibit at for the Grants Pass Museum of Art in Oregon (October 2011).
