The lectures will cover camera and lens recommendations and settings, different techniques to increase the chances of getting the decisive moment, metering for different light conditions and developing a personal style.
The assignments are geared to challenge participants to discover new ways of photographing the street scenes of San Francisco and to give focus to the photo-walk. During the photo-walks John will demonstrate how he takes street photographs and street portraits, revisits techniques learned in lecture and applies them in the field, coaches and answers questions from participants.
Selected photographs from each participant will be shown to the group at the end of each day for a group critique. John will review each participant’s selected images and give further coaching and recommendations.
October 28 – The workshop will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Green Tortoise Hostel in San Francisco. Following a brief lecture, the group will “take it to the streets” for a full day of shooting. Later that night you will be back in North Beach where the city lights, characters, and nightlife offer an excellent backdrop for street photography.
October 29 – Another day of lectures, shooting and critiques. The workshop will end at 6 p.m. Sunday with a review of and critique of images.

John G. Hernandez is a professional senior high school portrait photographer, a freelance photojournalist, and a wedding photographer based in Sacramento. He received his degree in photojournalism at San Francisco State University in 2009. If not photographing for work, he spends his time doing his favorite hobby - Street Photography. He takes his camera with him everywhere, always ready to press the shutter release. Unposed, his subjects are often unaware that he has already taken a photograph, and if they did, are too late to give him a smile or to hide one. He enjoys the thrill of capturing the unscripted connections between people and the environment they move in. He has photographed from the busy streets of San Francisco to the quiet suburbs of Elk Grove. In February 2017, he showed a collection of his color street photographs at Sacramento’s Viewpoint Gallery, entitled Grounded: The Street Photography of Casey LeClair and John Hernandez.
