Introduction to Macro Photography

Registration is closed for this event
Discover tips, techniques and equipment used for successful macro photography and then practice your newfound skills in class.

Explore the art of macro photography as you get up close and capture the details of small subjects–making them seem bigger than life!

Even ordinary items can take on a new look with this creative approach.

Bring a camera with a memory card and fully charged battery, along with any small items you’d like to photograph.

This class is a hands-on session. After covering the basics, we will set up and take macro photographs in class.

If you do not have a macro lens, a variety of lenses and adapters will be available–such that I should have a combination that fits your camera [but, given the wide range of cameras, this provision is not guaranteed]. If you have a macro lens, close-up lens, extension tube or other magnifying device, bring it to class.

Also, it would be a good idea to bring a tripod if you have one. I hope that you join me and your fellow students for this fun and instructive class.

 Your Instructor: William Miller

In the spring of 2006 I decided to seriously take up digital photography after taking classes with Point Reyes landscape photographer, Marty Knapp. I photographed architecture, flowers, landscapes, people and cars, but found my passion was photographing birds. Since, I have traveled extensively in California photographing birds, many in location close to Sacramento. I have gotten to know my equipment, bird photo locations and the birds themselves. I have taken classes from Art Morris and others on post production, and studied extensively online to increase my awareness and understanding of the craft. I have conducted bird photography tours in the Central Valley and along the Central coast. I have had my photos published by the San Francisco Estuary Institute [SFEI} and have self-published children’s books on birds, including Bapa Looking; The ABC’s of Birds; and A Day on Staten Island.

While I am largely self-taught, I have learned much to share with beginners and advanced photographers alike that will help you become a better bird photographer.

Examples of my photography can be viewed at my “work-in-progress” website/blog at: ColeMillerPhotography.com
