Unlocking Creativity in Mobile Phone Photography

Registration is closed for this event
Much more than a toy, smartphones offer a whole new way of seeing photographically. This workshop will begin by helping you learn the basics of smart phone photography, navigating your phone, and learning about some of the "apps" that are available to help expand your creative process. An overview of special tripods and lenses options will also be explored. In the final part of the workshop, everyone will go outside to take a few images and compare results. Lastly, the workshop will offer information on printing your images and enlarging them using new computer software. You may wish to be ready to purchase a few suggested Apps (cellphone applications) when you’re at the workshop so you'll leave with new options and information.

A Few Key Topics:

  • Understanding the strengths and limitations of camera phones
  • Composition strengths and limitations
  • Fine tuning exposure
  • Panoramic stitching from multiple source images
  • Compositing and masking
  • Adding “special effects”, creative filters and textures

Betty Sederquist has worked professionally as a photographer for decades, delighting in the transitions from film to digital…and now, to smartphones. In Alaska, she worked as a photographer for Alaska magazine, traveling the length of that great state. Later, she worked for Sacramento magazine and then taught photography as an adjunct professor for 20 years at Folsom Lake College. Since 1999 she has been leading photo tours, first for Dolphin Charters and more recently for Strabo Tours. She has guided photographers so such places as the Galapagos, Bhutan, Tanzania and Alaska. Coming up in the next year are trips to Alaska, Bodie, Morocco and Ireland. In California she has organized photo workshops in Bodie and Point Reyes.

Until about ten years ago, Betty treated smart phones as a toy, great for phone conversations and GPS guidance. However, after watching fellow professional photographers do amazing things with these tiny devices, she has been using her smart phone more and more, even for “serious” work. Although the phone does have its limitations, those are disappearing as technology advances.
