In Hal Wilson’s 30-year career as a public schools Speech Pathologist he made most of his own therapy materials. Back in the 1990s he would cut and paste (literally) photocopies of public domain drawings and then recombine the images to make "story starters" for his students who experienced language development difficulties. Hal assembled enough of these materials to become a published author of speech therapy materials. Most of the exercises that he designed incorporated those recomposed drawings.

Around 2013 after Hal retired, he and his wife became docents at Hearst Castle. Their job was to dress up in 1930s attire and wander around looking like “snooty” guests of Mr. Hearst. Hal became interested in Hollywood Portrait Photography and created a persona of the "Obnoxious Newspaper Photographer". To complete the persona, he modified a working Speed Graphic camera to take digital images.

After suffering a back injury, Hal’s doctor ordered him not to do anything. He decided to take advantage of the situation and learn Photoshop.

Hal went back to combining images (as he used to do for his students), but this time he used photographs. He had access to millions of pictures available online and at the Library of Congress. Hal bookmarks those pictures that have interesting elements. Using these images, he begins cutting and pasting bits and pieces of them until a new composition emerges.

Hal’s work has been shown in galleries in his local area. He has been accepted into the California State Fair Fine Art Exhibit. Hal writes that he hoped his large print, Séance Night, which was accepted into the 2018 State Fair, would bring people “with their nose right up close to study the detail.” This piece won an award of merit at the Fair.
