The People and Places of Guatemala A Viewpoint Workshop Travelogue [Members Meeting]

In April of this year a group of Viewpoint members traveled to Guatemala for a workshop hosted by Rebecca Gregg.  The workshop focused on capturing the people and traditions of one of Central America’s most diverse countries.

We timed our visit during Semana Santa so we could capture the Lenten celebrations. Some consider the Antigua celebrations the largest in the world with some 50 celebrations over the 40-day Lenten period.  Processions fill the streets of Antigua and our tour members captured some stunning images.

We spent three days at Lake Atitlan, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, Atitlan is home to diverse indigenous communities.  One evening we participated in a traditional Mayan ceremony.

Some of our most rewarding experiences were when we were able to photograph and visit with the Guatemalan people. Our visit to a Guatemalan weaving cooperative resulted in some vibrant images as the women showed us how the dyes are made and the fabrics are woven. One day we had a portrait session with 3 generations of one family and another day we piled in the back of a pick up and traveled to a highland village to make tamales from scratch.

The workshop participants look forward to sharing their images of this beautiful and friendly country.

Time will also be spent in discussion about future workshops.

Hope to see you there.
