Viewpoint Photographic Art Center presents the photographs of David Gordon in an exhibition titled Reconfigured Architecture. In these mostly black-and-white images, Gordon has ‘reconfigured’ architectural patterns using a digital form of double exposure to produce stark constructions that are as confounding as they are intriguing, as alien as they are familiar, as unsettling as they are compelling.

As Gordon states, “My Reconfigured Architecture series investigates the patterns, rhythms, and geometry of buildings in urban settings. Inspired by the accidental symmetries found in reflections in glass, these digital composite images combine photographs with rotated versions of themselves to create unexpected juxtapositions. Inhabiting the boundary between abstraction and representation, they employ visual paradoxes to investigate the psychological process of association and suggest dreamlike, alternative realities.”

The technique of Reconfigured Architecture involves the use High Dynamic Range (HDR) software to meld together each photograph with its rotated version. While HDR was designed to combine different exposures of the same scene to increase the range of tonal values that could be captured, it can also be used artistically to layer any two images more smoothly than by simply adding their pixel values (which is basically how an in-camera double exposure works). “This experimental approach,” Gordon explains, “emerged from an interest in Surrealist photomontage as well as encounters with the photographic works of Robert Weingarten, Ray Metzker, and Edmund Teske.”

David Gordon is an artist, photographer, and composer based in Santa Barbara. Across multiple media, his works are linked by an overall compositional approach based on the use of algorithmic processes to investigate perception, time, and experience. David holds a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from Pomona College and a master’s degree in Music Composition from California State University, Northridge. He is currently pursuing a joint Ph.D. in Music Composition and M.S. in Media, Arts, and Technology at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
