The 2013 theme for the fifth annual December juried exhibit is Twelve: Natural Magic. The title conjures the16th century Italian thinker Giambattisa della Porta's, writings on the nature of light. Because of his studies with projected light, della Porta was arrested for sorcery during the Inquisition! Since this is Twelve in 2013, Natural Magic carries the mystic of the number 13 clothed in the magical qualities of light, the wellspring of photography. Each year the Twelve show is characterized by creative and skillful interpretations of the theme of the exhibit. With Natural Magic, this well-established tradition continues as the interpretations appeal both to the eye and the imagination.

The exhibit of over 80 prints shows a range of responses to the theme. Phiilip Pogledich’s black and white romantic image Mountain Time received the First Place Award. An ethereal view of Brandon Beach by John Hennessy garnered Second Place and Melissa Leady’s Sunrise Staircase captured both the change of color and the Third Place Award. Honorable Mention selections were awarded to Jim McMahen for the palladium print Vernal Falls, Judy Yemma for Light Dance and Lewis Kemper for Sunflower.

Auburn commercial photographer, artist and teacher, Keith Sutter judged the exhibit from nearly 350 submissions. A graduate of Brooks Institute, Sutter is an accomplished photographer whose own work has taken him to the Taklamakan Desert of China, the cold waters of Alaska and desolate volcanic mountains of Baja. His photographs have been widely published including National Geographic, Architectural Digest and Sunset. Sacramentans may recognize his extraordinary studies of the Sacramento Ballet in the last several years. Samples of his portfolio can be seen at

For artistic shoppers in the gift giving season, a special feature of Twelve: Natural Magic is that prints purchased during the show may be taken immediately from the walls rather than waiting until the end of the exhibit. Art truly is the gift that keeps on giving.
