From Where I Stand: 2010 High School Exhibit

From Where I Stand is a group exhibit of photography students from ten high schools in Sacramento, California, and the surrounding region. Working with both traditional and digital media, the one hundred photographs in the exhibit demonstrate the energetic, experimental and fresh perspective of these young artists. Clearly the points of view are individual, as the title of the exhibit suggests, yet the subjects and attitudes reflect the common concerns and experiences of today’s young student artists. The photographs illustrate technical competence in night exposures, portraits, landscape, motion studies, digital high dynamic range, black and white, and color images.

Teacher Lori Emmington from Vista del Lago High School in Folsom observes that the photography curriculum in high school "teaches students to rethink the way they approach their world, and to re-imagine it and share it through their own unique perspective."  The influential Bauhaus teacher and photographer Laszlo Moholy-Nagy observed,  "The illiterate of the future will be the person ignorant of the use of the camera as well as the pen."  The exhibiting student artists illustrate the depth of their understanding as visual scholars as well as the breadth of photographic education in the region. Emmington sums up the importance of photography in the curriculum, "Photography teaches students visual literacy skills that empowers them with skills to decode, as well as encode visual messages—skills that are essential for success in the 21st century."

The photography students approached the show with the same seriousness required of all gallery exhibits–preparing their work, writing a short biography and artist statement as part of the learning process. All of the images on view during the exhibit are offered for sale.

Viewpoint Gallery expresses its sincere thanks to the high school teachers who coordinated their students’ preparation for the exhibit, and of course, to the students who are sharing their photographic talents and perspective in From Where I Stand.
