Vintage Contemporary: The Charter Members Show

In October, Viewpoint's 20th Year Celebration culminates with Vintage Contemporary: The Charter Members Show, an exhibit of work by many of the original members of Viewpoint Photographic Art Center.

A little over twenty years ago, a small group of people had a really good idea. Spear-headed by Jeff Redman and encouraged by CSUS photography professor Ralph Talbert and camera manufacturer Jim Galvin, the idea eventually became Viewpoint Photographic Art Center (then known as Sacramento Valley Photographic Art Center). It began with the desire to create a photographic group to foster the appreciation of all types of photography in the Sacramento area through exhibits and education. As the organization grew, they wrote a charter and bylaws, became a legally-recognized nonprofit, and formally began soliciting members and planning exhibits. The group envisioned a volunteer organization that would reach out to local photo clubs, schools, professionals, serious amateurs, and beginners alike. The pioneer group was ten, then thirty, then eighty — and finally at the end of the first year there were 180 charter members.

The Vintage Contemporary exhibit will showcase the work of over 50 charter members and celebrate Viewpoint's continuing role in the community. The title encourages artists to show older work created using traditional photographic media or current work in digital or alternative processes. In fact, some artists may choose to exhibit paintings, mixed media, video, or other media to reflect their ever-evolving artistic interests.
