Rick Kattelmann — Sichuan Sampler

Rick Kattelmann’s Sichuan Sampler is a collection of images made on travels through the Sichuan region of China. “Photography is a means of enhancing my memory of the visual imagery of life,” Kattelmann says. “Every day, we are fortunate to observe millions of scenes. A fraction of those scenes impress with us with their beauty, information, mystery, and other attributes. Photography allows us to create a record of some of those scenes and then, if we wish, to modify those recordings to emphasize whatever appealed to us at the time of capture.”

Kattelmann has pursued photography as a hobby for more than 40 years, starting with backpack trips in the Sierra Nevada. After a long absence from traditional darkroom work, Rick began learning digital printing techniques in 2003; a decade later, the learning process continues. “Watching prints emerge from the printer is almost as much fun as seeing a silver print take form under the safelight,” he says.

A mostly-retired hydrologist specializing in watershed management and snow hydrology, Kattelmann was the principal hydrologist for the Sierra Nevada Ecosystem Project, served two terms on the Mono County Planning Commission, was a founder of the Eastern Sierra Land Trust, and authored more than 150 scientific and technical papers. He lives in the eastern Sierra Nevada community of Sunny Slopes with his wife, Sally Gaines.
