Viewpoint Photographic Art Center is pleased to present the exhibit Seeing Past Your Brain’s Filters by Bobbi Mercouri in its Step Up Gallery in January.

Bobbi Mercouri seeks to make photographs that transcend the medium’s ability to record a realistic interpretation of a scene. Mindful of scientific studies of perception and how the human brain filters visual information, she crafts images to communicate her feelings about what she photographs. “There’s magic in the light,” she says, “and magic in the details.” By finding and featuring the magic, she hopes “to enable the viewer to see past the brain’s filters and experience her personal creative vision, the emotional content of each piece.”

Mercouri’s strategy is to stylize her images, emphasizing the elements that are emotionally evocative and muting or removing color to reduce verisimilitude. Her career in graphic arts, mass media, and marketing helped her understand how pictures work -- how “color, movement, and composition work together to create images that combine both art and design”. A self-confessed “computer nerd,” she naturally took to Photoshop as an ideal tool to “bring out the picture behind the photograph.”

Although her intent in photography is to share her vision with other people, Mercouri does not like to title her photographs. “I feel that beyond my vision of the scene are the individual experiences of the viewer, and I don’t want to influence that response” with words. Instead, she relies on her control of pictorial elements to communicate “the emotional content of each piece.”

Bobbi Mercouri is a native Californian and a lifelong photographer whose first camera was a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye. She has participated and received awards in several group shows and juried exhibitions in and around the Sacramento Valley, and has been a member of Viewpoint Photographic Art Center since 2010.
