In January, Viewpoint Gallery honors Gene Kennedy with a retrospective exhibition that he intriguingly calls 44 Years of Real Estate Photographs.

“For many years, I have struggled to find a single phrase that describes what I do photographically,” Kennedy states. “From nature photography to landscape photography to architectural photography to environmental documentary photography to humorous photography to Gladding McBean photography — nothing covers it all. Recently, as I turned my career energies in a new direction ... I stumbled onto that elusive phrase.”

“Real Estate Photography is inclusive of all the serious and not-so-serious work I’ve ever done about the land, what has happened to the land, and what comes with the land. The physical components of real estate include the land and anything affixed to the land or appurtenant to it, and include buildings, fences, trees, and watercourses, as well as the air above it and the earth below it.”

“Why a single-phrase title? First, it provides a moniker for this retrospective exhibition, which covers 44 years of sporadic photographic production.... Second, I like how it encompasses all those aspects of landscape, nature, and architecture without judgment.”

“Third, I like that the phrase doesn’t have any artsy connotations. I realize that these pictures are eligible for consideration as serious art, but that isn’t why they were taken. They are just descriptions of real things in the real world ... made with more concern for clarity than artfulness (but with an artful eye), and more interest in information than dramatic lighting. In other words, they’re just real estate pictures. Throw in a little luck, a sense of humor, a love of taking pictures out in the real world, and 50 years of practice, and this is what you get.”

Gene Kennedy is recognized nationally for his photography of the contemporary American landscape. His work has been exhibited across the United States, and is in the collections of the California State Library, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. In addition, he has been a mentor and inspiration to many through his teaching, his Gladding McBean workshops, his rental darkroom business, his gallery directing, his magazine editing and writing, his volunteer work, and his friendship.
