Jillian, by Ouatu-LascarMircea Ouatu-Lascar finds great joy being outdoors to photograph nature, architecture and  occasionally people.  Although he likes to travel, Mircea enjoys very much photographing close to home, in our local parks and around town.

Some of his most popular images are animals and birds at the nearby zoos and sanctuaries.  He likes to observe the animals, learn about them, their species as well as the names and the stories of the zoo residents.  When he photographs at the zoo Mircea prefers a telephoto lens because it allows him to emphasize his subject and leave the surroundings vague.  Looking through the viewfinder with the lens wide open the fences disappear, the subject comes close, and for a brief fraction of time the crowds also seem to disappear leaving the impression of an intimate ‘one-on-one’ moment.

Bringing the viewer into the world of animals through his lens and his heart, Mircea advocates for wildlife conservation, care and education.  Perhaps a photograph can start a conversation, which leads to awareness that grows into compassion, which in turn motivates positive action.

When does a passion take hold of your soul?

MIrceau Ouatu-Lascar HeadshotFor Mircea Ouatu-Lascar it was a project on computational photography at Intel.  A casual hobby during school and his career in high-tech, photography became a passion that changed his life.  So much so that he retired early to focus full-time on the technical and artistic aspects of photography.  Primarily self-taught, Mircea also frequently travels to partner with top photographers in specialty workshops around the country to further develop his skills and artistic vision.

Born in Romania, Mircea now lives in Gold River, California.  He loves being outdoors and finds inspiration in both natural and engineered settings.  You may recognize his photography from group shows in local galleries, the California State Fair, and his presentations at OPEN SHOW Sacramento events.

Mircea proudly supports local charity art auctions and fundraisers.  His photography was featured at the 8th and 10th Annual “Art Where Wild Things Are” shows, benefitting the Effie Yeaw Nature Center.  The event was sponsored jointly by the American River Natural History Association and the Sacramento Fine Arts Center.  Mircea’s photographs were also featured in the 11th ArtFarm exhibit and fundraiser supporting the YoloArts Art&Ag Project.  His photographs were published in the 2018 and 2019 Sutter Buttes Calendar that benefits the Sutter Buttes Regional Land Trust.
